Literature Circle

Pre-reading Preparation

Director: What is this book about? If we look at the summary in the inside cover, the about the author on the inside of the back cover and the quote on the back cover we should get a better idea before we jump in.

Summarizer: The books main character is Catherine, a 12-year-old girl. She has an autistic brother named David. She is very involved in David’s life, helping to make simple but important rules. There is also Jason, the kind-of-friend, and Kristi, the friend Catherine hopes to have. This book might examine the life of a family with an autistic child with an even greater focus on the sibling relationship.

Director: Very good, anything else we see before we begin reading?

Illustrator: The front cover shows a duck saying “rules” to a goldfish below. There is also a list of rules on the back cover including “no toys in the fish tank”. I wonder if the duck and goldfish might symbolize Catherine and David’s relationship?

  1. Hi James,

I love your blog! Very appealing to the eye- I couldn't figure out how to add color to mine or organize it like yours, so mine is very basic. Great work! I want to point out your Illustrator. That is an awesome insight, very good point. It looks like the rubber ducky is looking at the fish reminding him of the rules, which very well may be a symbol of Catherine reminding David of the rules.

  2. I agree, great job on this "be the student" lesson, and rather insightful.
